Maria is a creative imagining and a psychological portrait of Maria Callas. The film takes place in the ’70s near the end of Callas’ life. A story about a woman that lived from the ’20s to ’70s, a woman who burned her voice, her life, by doing (what she loved) her work.
“It was very moving to be wearing a piece of Cartier jewelry she wore and owned. I chose to wear it for a very important scene where she is with her sister and facing many hard truths. To have jewelry of such a high quality on camera felt special and right for Maria. She was such an elegant lady.”– Angelina Jolie.
The film, which premiered last night as part of the 81st Venice International Film Festival, features Jolie wearing figurative panther brooch (1971) and a rose clip brooch (1972), reflecting Callas’ singular style. The rose brooch, crafted in gold, platinum, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and rubies, features a signature mechanism that allows the petals to be opened and closed.
“Like so many other important women of the time, Maria Callas chose Cartier for jewellery that reflected her personality. When I think of the relationship between Maria Callas and the Maison, the quote of another brilliant woman comes to mind, the Mexican actress María Félix, who said, ‘Cartier has always been known as the jeweller of the aristocracy of blood, but also of talent.”- Pierre Rainero, Image, Style and Heritage Director.
Cartier’s more recent High Jewellery creations were also included in the film, with a striking alldiamond ensemble of earrings, necklace and ring from [Sur]Naturel. Dedicated to the preservation and transmission of cultural heritage, the Maison also offered financial support for the film production’s usage of La Scala opera house.
